Eight new cases of coronavirus confirmed in south Cyprus

Eight new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in southern Cyprus on Friday half of which are health professionals.

In a statement by the Cyprus health ministry, three of the new cases are health professionals at Paphos hospital and one in Limassol hospital.

Another case concerns an employee at the Limassol hospital who is not a doctor or nurse.

The other three are contacts of persons already tested positive for the virus. Two of them are members of the same family.

This brings the total number of cases in the country (south Cyprus) to 75.

In a related development, a Greek Cypriot police officer contracted the virus, a police spokesman said on Friday afternoon.

Unfortunately, it is true, a police officer serving at the headquarters has contracted the virus, police spokesman Christou said.
Contact tracing is underway and instructions will be given for the 14-day self-isolation, Christou said.
Our officers are always on the frontline and as such it was inevitable for there to be a positive case.

According to the news by Cyprus Mail, it was not immediately clear if it is a new case or a previously confirmed case which is only now being reported as having been a police officer.
