19-year-old South African student sent to prison for 45 days for drugs crime

A 19-year-old South African student who was arrested for drugs in Famagusta has been sent to prison for 45 days pending trial.

The accused only identified as K.L.G was arrested by police patrolling Asena Street on Thursday, September, 17 after he was caught with the drugs in his pocket.

He was taken to a court in Famagusta on drug charges.

At the hearing on Thursday last week, Deputy Prosecutor Hüseyin Eser, who carried out the case on behalf of the Prosecutor General's Office, invited Hüseyin Özdesoy, the investigator of the matter, working at the Directorate of Prevention of Narcotics and Smuggling to the witness stand in order to convey the request regarding the issue.    

Witness police officer Hüseyin Özdesoy stated that the suspect was arrested on charges of drug taking and saving.

Hüseyin Özdesoy reminded that the suspect was spotted in the act by police patrol on Asena Street in the Police Station District. He explained that the suspect tried to flee when he saw the police vehicle, and at that time he threw a wrapped cigarette, which contained a cannabis type drug mixed with tobacco, and a cannabis type drug weighing about half a gram.    

The witness police, stated that 1 gram and 62 milligrams of drugs were seized.  

The witness police demanded the court to send the suspect to prison, after emphasizing that the suspect, to whom he had notified a written case, had resided in the country without permission since December 23, 2019, since he did not renew his student registration.    

Evaluating the testimony in his presence, Senior Judge Çiğdem Güzeler sent the suspect to prison as an invalid prisoner for a period not exceeding 45 day to be tried in the future for the illegal residence and drug crime he committed.
