Unknown person attack LGBT+ youth with bucket full of sewage water in Famagusta

It was reported that an LGBT+ youth was allegedly attacked with a bucket full of sewage water by someone in military uniform in Famagusta.

In a statement by the Queer Cyprus Association on Wednesday, it said, "LGBTI+s are still not safe" in the country pointing out that serious concerns have arisen about the attacks against LGBT+s in Cyprus recently.

In the statement, it was stated that a young man living in Famagusta was subjected to a homophobic attack on Friday evening by a man dressed in military clothes, wearing a white mask and holding a bucket.

"After making homophobic hate speech to the victim, the attacker poured the bucket full of sewage water over his head and quickly fled the scene," the statement said.

In the statement, it was emphasized that "Such crimes against fragile groups should be evaluated within the scope of hate crimes and investigated more carefully by the police and the perpetrators should be brought to justice immediately".

It was claimed that the victim, who gave a statement to the police after the incident, was informed that an investigation would be carried out on the subject, and that the police, who did not receive the official complaint of the victim, also refused to take the bucket found at the scene, which should be used as an evidence.

“This situation raises serious concerns that the LGBTI+ community in Cyprus is not adequately protected by the police and the legal system. It is known that there were various store cameras and people who witnessed the event in the place where the incident took place. In all this context, the suspect should be identified and prosecuted as soon as possible.”

The statement continued:

“Queer Cyprus Association and Human Rights Platform will follow this event and it should not be forgotten that LGBTI+ rights are human rights. We would like to remind you that the victims who have experienced similar situations are not alone and can request solidarity and help by calling the Queer Cyprus Association Solidarity Hotline (+90 542 8585847). LGBTI+'s should be safe in Cyprus and the authorities should take steps to ensure that such attacks are not repeated and that LGBTI+'s human rights are respected. Queer Cyprus Association and Human Rights Platform will follow this issue in order to fight against such homophobic attacks.”
